About The Build:

Regardless of age, if there’s any bike that’s sure to put a smile on anyone’s face, it’ll be a BMX bike. If there’s a brand that’s synonymous with BMX racing, it’s GT Bicycles. Derek’s personal race bike is a highly evolved version of the chromoly frames Gary Turner made by hand in his garage, but it still carries with it the craftsmanship and attention to detail that made the brand so famous. Designed to be race-ready from the factory, the frame was built with proprietary hydroformed tubing in order to maximize the frame’s rigidity. This translates to break-neck acceleration when the start gate opens.

It isn’t surprising that Derek, our resident pro BMX racer chose this frame. He grew up racing BMX and knows the winning history associated with the GT brand. In order to wring out the maximum amount of potential the frame can offer, he chose to build it from the ground up. Steering is expertly controlled with an FSA Impact Headset and an Elevn Technologies handlebar and fork combo. An FSA Assault crankset with a Rennen 44-tooth chainring propels the bike forward and a Shimano DXR brake slows it down if Derek’s coming in a little too hot. Wanting a light, yet robust pair of wheels, Derek elected to have a custom wheelset built with DT240s hubs and Sun Envy rims. Finally, Shimano 105 Road Pedals and a set of the ODI Ruffian Black Grips give him a firm connection to his GT Speed Series. All he has to do is let her rip and hang on.
