It’s not every day you see a former XC world champion ripping around on your local trails. But, thanks to a visit from Catherine Pendrel, after racing the US Cup season opener at the Mellow Johnny’s Classic in Texas, that was indeed the case here in San Luis Obispo. Rather than head all the way back to Canada in between Texas and an upcoming US Cup race in San Dimas, California, Pendrel and teammate Maghalie Rochette set up camp in San Luis Obispo for a bit of training.
We caught up with them at the local trailhead where they were gracious enough to put up with a few of our questions.
Art’s: Thanks again for taking the time to meet up with us. It’s great to have you pick San Luis Obispo as a training destination—we always rave about how great it is here, but we’re a touch biased so it’s nice to have some credible outside opinions!
Catherine Pendrel: Our pleasure. Thanks for making it fun and easy!
Art’s: It seems like both of you are off to a good start with strong performances at the Mellow Johnny’s season opener, where do you see your season going this year?
CP: Yes I felt great in Texas so really excited to see where the rest of the season can go. I really want to return to consistent podium finishes on the World cup circuit and am also hoping to represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this July.
Art’s: Any specific goals?
CP: World Domination ;-) Nah, I just want to feel like I am able to give my best physically and technically at each event and hopefully that has me stepping onto the top step of the podium a couple times.
Art’s: Having spent 10 days in SLO, what’s your favorite aspect of training here? Any favorite trails, moments stick out?
CP: Ohh. So many! We have spent most of our time in Templeton. The road riding there is spectacular. I’d have to say my favorite part of riding mountain bikes in SLO is actually getting to chase my mechanic Chris Mathis down his home trails. We don’t always get to ride much with the staff on the road so it is pretty fun to go hammer together!
Art’s: As a longtime veteran, what do you enjoy most about riding for the Luna Chix Pro Team?
CP: I honestly think we have the best team out there starting from the top down. The owners of ClifBar have an amazing vision to promote strong, healthy role models to other women and girls. They support us fully to be our best from great nutrition on the bike, support staff (mechanics Chris and Dusty & our one-man extraordinaire Waldek) amazing sponsors and fun, talented teammates.
