Ask a Mechanic: When to Replace a Chain

Welcome to our Ask a Mechanic column where our expert mechanic Daniel Slusser answers your bike maintenance questions. If you have a question for Daniel, please post it on our Facebook Wall or e-mail Daniel directly at daniel.slusser@artscyclery.com.

A common question that mechanics get is, “When should I replace my chain?” Park tool makes a great chain checker that I’ve used at every shop that I have ever worked at. I’ve used others too, but the precision and accuracy of the Park CC-2C kept bringing me back to it.

However, there is another way to measure chain wear without a chain checker. Watch the video above starring my friend and former Team Highroad race mechanic, Greg O’Keeffe to learn how.

If your chain is shot, you can find new road bike chains and mountain bike chains by clicking on the highlighted links.
