Randy and His Caad-illac

About the Build: It is winter, it is wet and that is no reason to get off your bike. Yes, some of you with weaker constitutions will run screaming to your trainer, but not Randy. Randy Johnston, one of Art’s Cyclery’s talented buyers, is a firm believer in busting out the miles even when the weather takes a turn for the worse. A few rides in wet conditions can do wonders for your character but you have to have the right tool for the job. Randy held onto his old Cannondale CAAD 9 frame when he upgraded to an S-Works Tarmac and turned this seasoned warrior into one heck of a rain/dirt road/gravel grinding adventure machine.

This CAAD 9 was built on a budget, but built to be solid and dependable so Randy could count on it when the road dissolves into muck. He started with the bulletproof Shimano R501-A wheelset so he would never have to worry about durability in rain or rough patches and wrapped them in Vittoria Zaffiro II 25 mm tires for stability and puncture protection. He dressed the frame with a mixed SRAM Apex/Rival drivetrain to save money in case of a spill and because the resounding clunk of SRAM components confirm each shift, even when the gunk starts to build up.  Ritchey Superlogic Evo Curve handlebars have a rearward sweep to give his hands a stable and comfortable perch during those long slogs while the PRO PLT Carbon seatpost and Cannondale SL carbon fork absorb most of the road vibration he encounters.

If you need any convincing why keeping your old frame is a good idea, just take one look at Randy’s content smile in the picture above. He wears that same smile as he heads out for a winter rainy day ride, knowing full well the amount of fun he is about to have and the number of people missing out on the trainer at home. Check out more pictures and the complete spec list of Randy’s bike below. Don’t forget to take a look at our Kit Builder if you want to build up a rain bike of your very own!
