Cervelo’s amazing R5 California broke new ground for what was possible from a production carbon road bike when it was introduced three years ago. This made developing a worthy replacement for it no easy task. Even so, Cervelo found a way to improve on it and put together a new mind blowing 667 gram 54cm frame, including hardware!
The new bike is called the Rca. Not only is it as light as a feather, it’s aero too. The headtube, seattube, and downtube all feature aero leading edges. The rear derailleur cable is now routed internally for improved aerodynamics and a cleaner look. Seat and chainstays were tweaked as well to yield less drag. Cervelo boasts that all of this adds up to a reduction in drag of 7.4 watts compared to the R5. New hollow dropouts help save a few grams and an integrated crank-based power meter magnet shows that Cervelo’s engineers didn’t forget function while in their search of a faster form.
The Rca’s new carbon layup includes a new nano-resin to increase structural strength and improves interlaminar shear. Fork strength was improved as well through the use of a nano-nickel coating said to increase yield strength.
We can’t wait to get our hands on one and see what it is capable of! Check out the video below to learn more about its development:
